The area grew rapidly after the construction of the Croydon Canal, although this was replaced by a railway line that opened in 1839, driving industry to the area. Following the Great Exhibition, the Crystal Palace was reconstructed in Sydenham Park, the name of which was subsequently changed to Crystal Palace Park.
