The origins of Dulwich College date back to 1619, when Edward Alleyn was allowed to establish a new college in Dulwich. Before the foundation of the school however, construction had already begun on a chapel, schoolhouse and twelve almshouses. These buildings, as well as the smaller Grammar School building were to become the home of Dulwich College until the New College (the school's buildings today) was opened in 1870.
This illustration, by South London Prints, depicts one of the Old College buildings, still standing today in Dulwich Village. The simple contrast of white and blue helps to create a strong image, reflecting the building's architectural style.
